OOU Crisis: Management, Students Body Sue For Peace

The Management and Students Union Government of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, have sued for peace in the ongoing crisis that had engulfed the institution in the last three weeks.

It will be recalled that three major non-academic staff unions, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU), National Association of  Academic Technologists (NAAT) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian University (SSANU), had been on strike over non-payment of three and half months arrears in 2010.

Addressing the press, the institution's Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr Sam Oyeleye, said that the payment of the arrears as agreed by the institution's management and the unions could not be met due to the strike embarked on by the institution's Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) which prolonged academic calendar.

He said that the internally generated revenue (IGR) of the school was less than N665 million, the actual amount owed the staff. Oyeleye urged all the unions to be patient and give the management the chance to pay the arrears in installments bearing in mind that all salaries had been paid till date.

The students in a statement signed by the union president, Joel Oyeyiola, appealed to the aggrieved unions to reconsider their stance in the interest of the student populace.
