Hisbah officials, others take wives in Kano mass wedding; gives each bride N130,000!
The Hisbah Board, the Kano State agency that oversees social development, started a radio campaign in February calling for suitors to find a wife among the 1,000 widows and divorcees in the state. The Kano state government decided to play Cupid for unmarried women in order to reduce the rising divorce rate in the state.
Now 100 of those women have been wed during the first of ten planned mass wedding ceremonies at Kano Central Mosque yesterday. The brides did not get to meet their future husbands until right before they said their vows.
The brides were represented by the Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, and the grooms by a senior government official on behalf of Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Also in attendance were the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, who also doubled as the father of the day and notable Islamic clerics in the city and beyond who witnessed the mass wedding bankrolled by the Kano state Government.
